Ants love to carry their food and resources on a day to day basis. However, the truth is that they can also carry harmful pathogens that can jeopardize your health too.
According to studies, ants can carry bacteria and organisms that can harm the human body. In one study done at a medical hospital in Brazil, ants were proven as a potential vector for opportunistic and pathogenic bacteria. As a result of this, they pose a risk of causing nosocomial infections.
Another study showed that ants, specifically Pharaoh Ants could carry organisms, such as Salmonella spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., and Clostridium spp., and transmit diseases associated with these bacteria.
Apart from the capacity of ants to carry bacteria and organisms, they can also cause asthma attacks. Based on research, Pharaoh ants are considered a source of inhalant allergens. They have unique allergenic determinants that can cause an asthma attack in patients living in ant-infested urban areas.
Ants can also serve as hosts for Dicrocoelium dentriticum worms, which in rare cases cause health problems. These problems can include biliary obstruction, diarrhea, and infection.
