It’s Christmas morning. Your kids are frantically tugging you out of bed at 6:00 AM to show you what Santa brought. As the kids are unwrapping gifts, out of the corner of your eye, you see a little field mouse scamper out from behind the tree. Sure, mice can be cute when they’re outside, but they’re not so cute when you see them running around inside your home. Unfortunately, holiday decorating and the winter season can bring pests such as mice, spiders, ants, and ticks into your home. Luckily, there are a few tips you can follow to help keep those critters out.
Tip #1: Seal Your Home
According to pest control officials, colder temperatures naturally bring mice and other critters indoors, as they look for warmer places to spend the night. The most important thing to do is prevent this issue from happening in the first place. For starters, inspect your home for any entry points. Common places of entry include pipes under the sink, holes inside cabinets, and crevices near doors. It helps to fill these gaps with wire mesh. We also suggest to keep all your food properly stored, and to keep your home organized and clean. Perhaps most importantly, make sure to close your front door as often as possible to keep unwanted guests out.
Tip #2: Shake it Out and Inspect
With Christmas comes traditional decorations such as wreaths, Christmas trees, and flickering fireplaces. While they are beautiful additions to your home, pests see these decorations as their golden ticket! Pests can easily enter the home when we carry in natural greenery and firewood. Ants, ticks, spiders, and even mice can burrow themselves in the crevices of wood, and some insects might even lay eggs. To prevent this problem, make sure to closely inspect your items before bringing them into the house, and shake out the branches as well.
Tip #3: Unpack & Store Decorations Properly
Pests love dark, crowded, and cluttered places to hide and build their home. This is why attics, crawl spaces, and cardboard storage boxes are a dream for these unwanted guests. When you unpack your decorations for this holiday season, make sure to look for signs of pests such as droppings, gnaw marks, and nesting areas. When you put your decorations away, make sure to store them in plastic bins with tightly sealed lids.
