As the temperatures continue to rise, we are reminded summer is coming! In the warm months, it seems we can never escape some sort of bug or pest! They all appear to be crawling or buzzing around in some way. When it comes to winter, these pests seem to be M.I.A! So how do they survive winter?
Migration – similar to how the birds fly south – flying insects also migrate during cold winter months. For example – butterflies and dragonflies. A beautiful sight to see is the migration of the North American monarch butterflies! They fly to Mexico every year to get some sun! Other insects like bees, ants and termites stay close to home and migrate underground.
Swarming – In addition to migrating, some insects also use a clustering method. They keep warm by staying close together in groups. Beetles, bees and ladybugs tend to use this tactic to survive the winter!
Stick it Out! Some insects stick out the cold winter months, as their bodies were made for it! Some mites and spiders are able to withstand the drop in temperatures. Some insects on the other hand freeze completely. Crickets and caterpillars will freeze and become immobile. Their body shuts down until the warmer season approaches and they will come back to full function! What a mystery!
No matter the time of year, whether more evident or not, it’s best to be in the know of what pests are around! For any pest problems in Toronto, call Advantage Pest Control!
