If you hear scratching or odd sounds of movement in your kitchen when you are asleep – you could have a rat problem! Is it true that these pests are all about the night life?
The answer is yes – rats are nocturnal! On average they can sleep up to fifteen hours a day. Emerging at night for a little “midnight snack”. They know because of their small size and colouring (dark in colour), it is easier for them to go undiscovered at night. Those sneaky pests! This is the best time for them to search for food uninterrupted. In addition to being nocturnal, rats are also near-sighted and colour blind. They are extremely sensitive to any light. Their whiskers actually help them to navigate – similar to a walking cane for a blind person. This way they can get a better idea of their surroundings.
You may see on occasion, one of these pests pop out during the day. Don’t be fooled by one or two rats in sight. These pests can multiply quickly, so don’t prolong solving the problem.
Residential and commercial areas near construction sites are hot spots for these pests. With construction at the crosstown IRT on Eglington, we have received a 30% increase in calls for rats near this subway construction!
