Carpenter Ants are another home owner pest to be aware of in Toronto! Their swarming season is just around the corner! As a pest problem, sometimes they are confused with termites. Similar to termites, they are known for their ability to damage wood structures. Although carpenter ants do not actually eat the wood, they mill it by breaking it down for their nests. Physically, their antennae are bent which help make them more distinctive. So why the concern? They live in large colonies that can infest your home! They love to feed on human foods, so your pantry, is theirs too!
These ants are attracted to areas of high moisture and where wood or soil is exposed. Check areas like under your kitchen sink! They enter into your home through windows, holes in fountains, heat or air ducts, and sometimes through power or telephone cables! Any trees/wooden structures attached to your home are also easy access for them. Ants do not typically inhabit a home during the winter months. If you do have ants in your home during this time of year, It is usually indicative of an axial colony. If they are black, they are likely a carpenter ant.
To get rid of them, the infested wood will need to be removed. Make sure to remove any food sources and keep any foods in sealed containers. Call Advantage Pest Control to help solve the infestation of Carpenter Ants in Toronto!
