One of toughest and oldest insects in the world, is the cockroach. The cockroach has superior survival capabilities which allow it to survive in various climates.
Conquering the Cockroach!
The most common cockroach found in the GTA is the German cockroach. It is common for cockroaches to seek heat and look for heated structures to escape the cold weather as their native species prefers warmer temperatures. Other common cockroaches found within your home can include the Oriental cockroach, the American cockroach, the wood cockroach and the brown-banded cockroach.
Cockroaches love to inhabit spaces such as bathrooms, basements, kitchens and rooms that may have food and water. These environments are inviting to cockroaches as they are usually damp and warm. Cockroaches can also be nocturnal and have minimal activity during the day, and become very active at night. They move at very rapid speeds and can get from one room to another very quickly.
Typically, cockroaches eat decaying plants or other organic matter. However, once in your household they can eat anything from glue or soap to snacks in your pantry! They have a soft spot for junk food. However, these tough pests can survive for weeks without any water or food at all!
Cockroaches usually live for about a year. However, they can reproduce 100-200 eggs within this time. The pests are harmful to our households as they carry bacteria such as salmonella, staphylococcus and streptococcus. Their faeces also have harmful effects on human health, especially those with asthma.
